Turning 65 is a major milestone, and it also means it’s time to think about Medicare! Understanding your options and enrolling on time can help you avoid penalties and ensure you get the healthcare coverage you need. Here’s what you need to know to get started.
When Can You Enroll in Medicare?
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the first opportunity to sign up for Medicare. It lasts seven months:
3 months before your 65th birthday
The month of your birthday
3 months after your birthday
Enrolling during this time ensures your coverage starts without delay and helps you avoid late enrollment penalties.
What Are Your Medicare Options?
Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) – Covers hospital stays, skilled nursing care, and some home health services. Most people qualify for premium-free Part A if they’ve worked at least 10 years.
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) – Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment. The standard 2024 Part B premium is $174.70 per month.
Medicare Advantage (Part C) – A private insurance option that includes Part A & B benefits, often with extra perks like vision, dental, and prescription coverage.
Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) – Helps cover the cost of prescription medications.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans – Help cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and copays from Original Medicare.
Why Enroll on Time?
Avoid Late Penalties – Delaying Part B or Part D enrollment could mean higher premiums for life.
Prevent Gaps in Coverage – Missing your enrollment window could leave you without health insurance.
What If You’re Still Working?
If you have employer coverage, you may be able to delay Medicare enrollment without penalties. However, it’s best to check with your benefits administrator to see how Medicare works with your plan.
